What happens when you try to make a budget smartphone? Especially when you are an American mobile giant named Motorola… Well? The result is a complete disaster. And don’t think we’re just saying that to improve our website’s ranking. Read on to see why we objectively detest Motorola’s A810.

Design and Looks
Motorola generally make good looking handsets. It's a pity then that the A810 wasn't made privy to the family's good looks, having said that, a few people may actually like its design. But we cannot deny that it's simple looks are rather refreshing, especially when most manufacturers are trying to make smartphones look more and more sophisticated… not to mention intimidating. The phone has a red or blue accent surrounding the screen that looks tacky. As always, there is a navigation pad below the smallish screen that's an oddity on PDAs (except for Motorola ones) which makes browsing the menus easy.

The screen is 2.2 inches big (and we don't mean 'big' as in; adjective). Yes, for touchscreen standards that is pretty small. But the excuse is that Motorola have incorporated a nice D-pad below it that takes quite a lot of space. We cannot really say that's an excuse since all us users who openly curse Motorola for putting in a small screen secretly thank the phone maker for being ever so kind to put in that D-pad with a joystick in the centre. Coming back to the resistive screen, its image quality is sharp as you can judge from the specs.

The phone's UI is essentially the same as the one we see on the Moto Ming A1600 and the Motorokr E6. Its performance is much poorer than on its predecessors and the phone slows down even when performing the simplest of tasks. Maybe it's a hardware issue but at the end of the day, the phone is slow and that's not good at all. The OS also lacks in hardcore multi-tasking and organizing features and we are yet to see Motorola release a phone capable of these things in India. Anyway, this rebel without a cause must have put Motorola's marketing in a quandary so they decided they would project this phone as a media machine. Big mistake.

A cheap bundled headset and a shoddy 2MP camera do not make any phone worthy of the media phone tag. Yet if this is the best the phone has to offer then that's just sad. This time around, Motorola have forgone the real media player to replace it with two separate proprietary players for music and videos. The music player is average and the video player only supports 3gp and MPEG4 formats. The bundled headset performs pathetically but the option of standard 3.5mm audio port means that you can plug in a better one to assuage the substandard sound quality.

The only one application that we feel is worth mentioning is the Opera 8.5 browser. The popular browser is great and is the best mobile web browser till date. But until now, if you thought the phone was OK then maybe the next few lines will change your mind: The Motorola Moto A810 incorporates a Li-Ion battery that outputs 910 mAh. Anyone who is fairly acquainted with a mobile phone specs sheet will know that even basic phones that consume far less power have much more powerful batteries than this. And this energy demanding phone will not last you through the day.

The review says it all. If you're still not convinced read it again. If you are dead set on this phone, feel free to check it out but don't say we didn't warn you.
