Built around the Motorazr2 V8, the Luxury Edition version features new gold-plated design accents to make the already gorgeous handset look even better.

Design and Looks
The Motorola RAZR2 V8 pleases the senses from the first encounter; the folder form looks very stylish and is faithful to the traditions of Motorola design. It sports a solid construction with a polished all metal casing and 24K gold plated accents. The phone is also surprisingly thin, thinner than even most bar phones. But the spell is somewhat broken when you hold it in your hand; the 117g frame of the phone weighing you down a bit.

The phone's exterior sports clean lines, and an impressive 2” 256K colour QVGA resolution makes up for a secondary display. Now would be a good time to mention that there are very few phones in the market today with such an impressive secondary display, it's even similar to the primary display except it's only a little smaller.

Almost invisible to the naked eye are three touch sensitive buttons overlaying the outer display. They control the music functions of the phone and offer vibrational haptic feedback to the touch. But unfortunately you cannot navigate the menus with them. The only port on the side of the phone, that is, the left side, is a universal port for connecting the data cable, headset or charger. The sides of the phone features engraved diamond-cut patterns which look good and also enhance the phone's ergonomics. The back of the phone are interesting. It features leather made snakeskin pattern that makes gripping the phone easy and also lends to it a touch of class.

On opening the folder, users are presented with a stylish layout of keypad and the 2.2” QVGA display. Both displays offer good legibility under the sun however you cannot adjust the brightness of the external display. The folding mechanism is flawless and the set does not produce any creeks when folding. The keypad is completely flat but is great for texting thanks to the extra large keys and the large circular navigation pad. The nav-wheel is 18K gold plated and features laser-etched details that serve the dual purpose of boosting its looks and improving the nav-wheel's tactility. The alphanumeric keys however remain undivided longitudinally and offer little feedback. The keypad also features a dedicated key for the music player function.

Most Motorola phones today feature CrystalTalk technology which is supposed to enhance telephony. While on some Motorola sets this new technology does not produce any measureable effects, on others-and this includes the V8-its effects are noticed immediately. Using mic noise reduction and a noise adaptive speaker that adjusts the audio quality based on the surrounding ambient noise, the phone providers users with the best in voice reception and transmission.

The Motorazr V8 mounts the intuitive Linux Java 6.5 UI. It is both quick and stable and very user friendly. The phonebook onboard offers many ways to organize contacts and features extensive settings. There is also an option to access 'most recent contacts' using a tab by the same name.

Probably the most outstanding feature of the phone is the Talking Phone feature which offers voice assistance throughout the user interface be it while navigating the menus, providing voice identification of the caller, listing the contacts or simply reading messages or emails, rest assured, visually impaired users will always find this useful.

Although the V8 is not a feature phone, let alone a music phone, it does play music well. The music is provided by the Microsoft Windows Media Player 11. It comes with a music search engine exclusively built to help you search tracks; search attributes include genre, composer, album, artist or song title. For better enhanced audio quality, the Spatial Audio and bass boost feature offers users with an unmatched sonic experience. The spatial audio feature is also available for the video player.

So far the phone seems like a real deal, but the camera is a real deal breaker. Offering users with only 2MP resolution and no autofocus or flash, it looks like Motorola has installed the bare minimum camera simply because all phones in this range are equipped with one. Even the camera interface provides users with little to do; it offers users with only three quality settings and four different resolutions. Other features include Multi-Shot and Auto-Timer. Video quality isn't brilliant either as it is recorded at 30fps in QCIF format.

The pre-installed Opera browser is extremely functional. It lets users open up to five windows and the browser integrates a download manager to assist in downloading just about anything off the internet. Additionally, it provides support for a variety of web page types. The phone also supports Bluetooth A2DP profile for wireless Bluetooth headset connectivity.

Last but not the least, the phone offers back-up of all messages and contacts with assistance from Tarsin, a provider for mobile-backup solutions. The applications are called Motorola Text and Motorola Backup respectively. The backup is wireless and needless to say, GPRS must be activated to avail this facility. After taking a backup, it is saved on a secured server run by Tarsin. Another application that is worth a passing mention is the Rough Guides Mobile app, which provides a detailed map of Europe with information on points of interest for over 200 cities spanning 33 European countries.

There are few phones that pack functionality and luxury under the same form-factor and the Motorola Motorazr2 V8 Luxury Edition is definitely one of them. This phone is a keeper. It is also a limited edition product. So, if you want to get your hands on one of these, you'd better act fast.
